Breast cancer clinic, care unit opened at Swat hospital

MINGORA: A state-of-the-art breast cancer clinic and care unit, the first specialised facility of its kind serving over 10 districts across Malakand Division, was inaugurated at the Saidu Group of Teaching Hospitals (SGTH) in Swat.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chief Executive Prof Dr Israr-ul-Haq, Medical Superintendent Dr Jamil Ahmad, head of Surgical Department Prof Dr Anwar-ul-Haq, head of Gynecology Department Prof Dr Sania Khattak, Prof Dr Ajmal Khan, Dr Shaukat Ali, heads of various departments, DMS officers, doctors and paramedical staff. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Anwar-ul-Haq said that the newly established breast cancer care OPD represents “a ray of hope” for the people of Malakand Division - home to nearly ten million people - offering diagnosis and treatment under the supervision of highly qualified specialists using modern medical technology.

Prof Dr Sania Khattak highlighted that breast cancer is one of the fastest-spreading diseases among women in Pakistan. “The rate of breast cancer in women is rising alarmingly, and regular screening after the age of 35 is crucial for early detection and effective treatment,” she added.

Chief Executive Prof Dr Israr-ul-Haq described the establishment of the unit as a historic milestone for the region. He announced that diagnostic services will be conducted using an advanced mammography machine that meets international standards. Moreover, deserving patients will receive free treatment and diagnostic tests for one year.

He added that an awareness campaign would soon be launched at schools, colleges, and community levels to educate women about the early symptoms and preventive measures of breast cancer.Medical Superintendent Dr Jamil Ahmad termed the initiative a landmark step by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, saying it will benefit thousands of women across Malakand Division.
