Sindh Police Inspector Sikandar Channa on Friday brought to Karachi an abducted girl after her safe recovery in Multan, along with a lady constable, whose name is mentioned in an FIR registered against a Sindh police team over the death of a man, and former investigation officer ASI Ghulam Rasool.

The girl, said to be a minor, will be produced before the Sindh High Court on October 6. According to official sources, Multan police recorded the statement of Sindh Police Sub-Inspector Ghulam Hyder, who was part of the recovery team. In his statement, he maintained that the police party was attacked by a group attempting to take custody of the girl.

The Sindh police team, he said, repulsed the attack, during which a man fled towards the other side of the road and died in what police described as a road accident. The postmortem report of the deceased is still awaited. The matter began after the SHC had directed the Karachi police to recover the girl after she had been allegedly abducted and taken to Punjab. A Sindh police team, including a lady constable, proceeded to Multan after fulfilling all legal formalities and securing orders from the Punjab Home Department. However, when the team was returning after recovering the girl, they were intercepted near Muzaffarabad in Multan district by the opposing party seeking custody of the girl. In the ensuing clash, one person was killed. While Sindh police claimed the death resulted from an accident, the deceased’s heirs alleged that he was killed by police firing.

Punjab police later registered a murder FIR against the Sindh police team, and arrested the all team members including a lady constable, though the case remains under inquiry, with the version of the Sindh police party also being recorded. The girl’s production before the Sindh High Court on October 6 is expected to determine the next legal course in this sensitive inter-provincial case.
