The Young Doctors Association (YDA) of the Karachi Division has condemned the attempt to transfer back a doctor found guilty of harassment to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
The YDA termed the attempt ‘shocking and reckless’.
According to YDA officials, the doctor was declared guilty of harassment in three separate inquiry committees conducted by the JPMC, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) and Sindh health department. Despite ongoing judicial proceedings, a letter had reportedly been forwarded seeking his transfer back to the JPMC.
Karachi YDA President Dr Shaharyar Raza and General Secretary Dr Hamza Sohail, in a joint statement, criticised the move, saying it had raised serious questions over the credibility and intentions of the JPMC administration. They said reinstating an individual found guilty of harassment by official inquiries amounted to undermining justice and insulting the dignity of the victim.
The Karachi YDA put forward four demands, which included immediate dismissal of the doctor from service, maximum penalty under the Workplace Harassment Act, judicial accountability to ensure imprisonment, and a transparent inquiry into the issuance of the reinstatement letter.
“Harassment has no place in medicine. Those proven guilty must face the highest punishment, not protection. YDA Karachi will continue its struggle until justice is delivered,” the statement added.
