The younger generation is often described as the backbone of a nation’s future. Yet this future is increasingly under threat due to the rising use of vapes and cigarettes among teenagers and young adults. While governments and health organisations continue to warn against the dangers of smoking, subtle promotion through television, social media and entertainment platforms still normalises these harmful habits. This contradiction plays a powerful role in shaping young minds and influencing them towards unhealthy choices.

Vaping and smoking are often portrayed as symbols of confidence, independence and social acceptance. When young people see attractive actors, celebrities or influencers using these products on screen, they may begin to associate them with success, rebellion or popularity. Even when direct advertising is restricted, indirect promotion through films, dramas, music videos and lifestyle content continues to send a strong message. Over time, this repeated exposure sparks curiosity, encouraging many adolescents to experiment without fully understanding the long-term consequences of their actions.

The health effects of both vaping and smoking are serious and far-reaching. Nicotine addiction can harm the developing brain, affecting memory, concentration and emotional regulation. Smoking is closely linked to life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease and chronic respiratory conditions. Although often marketed as a safer alternative, vaping has also been associated with lung damage, breathing difficulties and increased anxiety among young users. Rather than enhancing energy or confidence, these habits gradually weaken both physical health and mental well-being, limiting a young person’s ability to reach their full potential.

Beyond health concerns, the social and economic consequences are equally troubling. Money spent on cigarettes and vaping devices could instead be invested in education, hobbies or personal development. Addiction may also lead to declining academic performance, strained relationships and, in some cases, social isolation. Families and communities frequently bear the emotional and financial burden of caring for individuals affected by smoking-related illnesses, creating a wider societal impact.

The role of media and advertising cannot be overlooked. Even subtle portrayals can glamorise smoking and vaping, undermining public health campaigns and sending mixed messages to impressionable audiences. Stronger regulations are needed to limit such depictions across television and digital platforms. At the same time, schools and parents must take an active role in educating young people about the realities behind the polished images they see on screens.

In conclusion, vapes and cigarettes pose a serious threat to the younger generation, not only by damaging their health but also by shaping their attitudes and lifestyles in harmful ways. While media continues to blur the lines, society must work together to promote awareness, responsibility and healthier alternatives. Protecting today’s youth is essential for securing a healthier and more promising future.
