Feedback

Dear Editor,

I am a regular reader of Us and have been reading it since I was 15 and am now 26. I think it used to be a lot more fun with lots of stories and fun articles. I remember a writer named Asif Nawaz whose stories I loved. Rutaba Tanvir and Unsa Ather are other writers I remember with fondness. I miss those days when ‘Comic Relief’ was actually funny. I wish you would increase the number of jokes in ‘Comic Relief’. The ‘Poets’ Corner’ is good still but used to be better. Please do something to make the magazine good again.

Hello Ed,

I am a bibliophile, so imagine my delight when I visited the Lahore International Book Fair (LIBF). Unfortunately, the fair coincided with the Basant festival. I was happy to read the LIBF account in today’s Us (20 February), and I agree with the sellers that it was not the ideal time to hold the book fest. The city authorities should have kept Basant in mind and scheduled the book fair either before or after the festival.

I would also like to take this opportunity to praise ‘Silent grief’ by Amna Ameer in a previous issue (6 February). Amna is an amazing writer, and I love her poems and write-ups.

Pollution hazards

Dear Editor,

Pakistan is facing a growing environmental crisis driven by rapid population growth, urban expansion and poor waste management. With a population of over 240 million, the country produces vast amounts of waste each day, putting severe pressure on natural resources and public health. Land pollution is widespread, particularly in major cities where inadequate garbage collection forces residents to dump waste in streets and empty plots. These unhygienic conditions create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and rodents, increasing the spread of diseases such as dengue and malaria.

Water pollution is also a serious concern. Industrial waste and untreated sewage are often discharged into rivers and coastal areas, contaminating drinking water and damaging aquatic life. During heavy rainfall, carelessly discarded rubbish blocks drains and further pollutes waterways. Air pollution in industrial centres has reached alarming levels. Emissions from factories, brick kilns and vehicles release harmful gases and particles, leading to smog and respiratory illnesses. Immediate and strict environmental action is essential to protect public health and future generations.
