So onward I go

Against a fashion calendar defined by noise and repetition, LFW Presents makes a deliberate opening move. Its first showcase signals ambition that extends beyond the runway.

LFW Presents makes its debut

Pakistan’s fashion calendar is crowded. Between bridal weeks, influencer launches and solo shows that blur the line between cultural milestones and marketing campaigns, the schedule fills up fast. What’s become harder to find is actual authority. That’s the gap LFW Presents is trying to fill.

The initiative from the team behind LAAM Fashion Week, launched last month on February 14 inside Islamia College Lahore. The venue wasn’t accidental. A red-brick institution founded in 1892, it carries a weight that a marquee tent simply can’t replicate. It added seriousness to the evening.

So what exactly is it?

LFW Presents describes itself as invitation-led and platform-led rather than for hire, which simply put, means designers can’t buy their way in. The initiative is co-founded by LAAM’s Amir Iqbal and Arif Iqbal alongside Design651’s Saad Ali (also CEO of PFDC). That’s a lot of influence in one room, which is either reassuring or worth keeping an eye on, depending on your perspective.

The integration with LAAM’s retail operation is smart. A showcase that feeds directly into shopping removes the usual gap between runway and retail. The real test, however, is whether that commercial pipeline shapes what is shown and whose work is selected.

Heritage dreams

For its inaugural edition, the platform chose Hussain Rehar and he didn’t hold back. His bridal showcase Nargis - Heritage in Bloom went full maximalist: jewel-toned teals, coin-layered headpieces, crimson florals, sculpted silhouettes and hemlines that demanded attention. It was a lot, deliberately so.

What kept it from tipping into chaos was discipline. The excess was organised. Makeup and styling worked with the clothes rather than against them. Accessories knew their place. It’s the difference between opulence and clutter, and Rehar landed on the right side of it.

Veteran actress Resham performed live and actress Ayeza Khan closed the show. Celebrity presence in Pakistani fashion has moved from optional to expected, and here it mostly worked because the clothes were strong enough to share the spotlight.

The bigger question

One successful launch is a good start. The larger ambition behind LFW Presents is to reposition Pakistan as a brand-led, IP-conscious creative economy rather than a simple production hub. Those are the right goals. However, an invitation-led model implies curation, but it also suggests exclusion. The success of this platform will not be measured by how polished its launches look, but by who it chooses to platform: emerging designers or the already established, experimental aesthetics or safe commercial bets.

As debut statements go, this one was confident and coherent. The map, as they say, has been redrawn. Now comes the harder part: following through.
