Islamabad: Pakistan’s role as a peacemaker between Iran and the United States, especially in brokering the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, was lauded at the International Legal Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Addressing participants, Senator Mushahid Hussain highlighted Pakistan’s role in peacemaking, saying as a pivotal player in Eurasia, Pakistan is at the heart of regional connectivity in geo-economics as well as centre stage in global diplomacy in geo-politics.

He referred to Pakistan as an emerging Muslim major middle power and said that, in the next 10 years, Asia would see the rise of five major Muslim middle powers: Pakistan, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Indonesia.

Senator Mushahid referred to the tactics of neocolonialism used to control countries through regime change, a practice that has destabilised countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He cited the overthrow of the government of Iran in 1953, the regime change in Guatemala in 1954 and the 1960 coup in Congo, which killed the great African freedom fighter Patrice Lumumba.

About the alleged illegal aggression launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, he said the purpose of the war was to initiate regime change in Iran and promote the notion of “Greater Israel” but due to the heroic resistance of the Iranian nation, that plan was foiled and the aggressors suffered a major defeat, the biggest setback for the West and Israel since the Suez War in 1956.
