DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Police foiled a major terrorist attack on the Khati police checkpost in the jurisdiction of Dera Town Police Station, officials said on Friday.

They said heavily armed militants launched an attack on the checkpost late on Thursday night. The attackers, they said, surrounded the facility and breached its outer wall. Their apparent objective was to enter the post and either take police personnel hostage or kill them, they added.

Police officials said the control room immediately dispatched quick response teams after receiving information about the attack. “The timely and effective response forced the attackers to flee before they could seize control of the check post,” said an official.

While escaping, the militants abandoned a pistol, several magazines, hand grenades and other equipment at the scene. Police have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace and apprehend the attackers.

No casualties were reported in the incident.
