Rawalpindi:A 16-year-old girl from Oreyani village in Kotli Sattian area of Murree has died after allegedly setting herself on fire due to alleged persistent blackmailing and harassment.
According to police and local sources, the teenager left her home and walked to a nearby under-construction house, where she poured petrol on herself and ignited it. She was rushed to a hospital in Rawalpindi with severe burn injuries but succumbed during treatment.
The District Police Officer confirmed the incident occurred approximately a week ago, noting that preliminary investigations indicate a local youth had been systematically blackmailing and threatening the victim over the phone, causing her profound psychological distress.
While the local police state that raids are underway to apprehend the suspect, the case has now also been taken up by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). While police authorities continue to issue public advisories urging citizens to report harassment early, these appeals ring hollow without a simultaneous, radical overhaul of the security and judicial systems.
Law enforcement agencies and specialised cybercrime wings remain overwhelmingly reactive rather than proactive, often acting only after a life has been lost. The institutional mechanism for reporting harassment remains riddled with bureaucratic friction, discouraging victims from stepping forward due to fears of social stigma and a lack of faith in immediate, protective intervention.
Meanwhile, brief details have emerged regarding the two women who were shot dead in separate incidents in the federal capital, police said on Monday. According to the police sources, a woman was allegedly shot and killed by her husband following a domestic dispute at their residence in Sector E-11/2.
The suspect was taken into custody and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. In a separate incident within the jurisdiction of Koral Police Station, a woman was allegedly gunned down by her two stepsons in Ghauri Town.
Police have rounded up the suspects and initiated an investigation into the motive behind the killing. Authorities said further inquiries are underway in both the cases and legal proceedings have been set in motion.
