Islamabad:Environmentalists and community leaders on Friday stressed that protecting nature is essential for safeguarding future generations, saying climate resilience, responsible waste management and conservation efforts must begin at the grassroots level. They noted that Integrated Resource Recovery Centres (IRRCs) have emerged as effective community-based models for promoting environmental sustainability by encouraging waste segregation, recycling and public awareness, says a press release.

They stated this during a Community Forum organized by Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Association (AHKMA) in connection with World Environment Day 2026. The event brought together government officials, environmental practitioners, youth representatives and members of civil society for discussions on practical solutions to environmental protection and climate challenges. The event was held under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature, for Climate, for Our Future,” and reaffirmed a collective commitment to protecting natural resources, reducing pollution and advancing sustainable development through community-led action.

Speaking as the chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Haripur Ms Humaira highlighted the importance of partnerships between public institutions, development organisations and local communities in addressing environmental issues. She said environmental protection was no longer a choice but a necessity in the face of increasing climate-related challenges.

She urged citizens, particularly young people, to take an active role in tree plantation, responsible waste disposal and the protection of natural resources. Addressing the gathering, AHKMA Chief Executive Sumaira Gul said environmental challenges could only be tackled through collective responsibility and local participation.

She said communities were at the forefront of the fight against climate change and environmental degradation, adding that awareness, sustainable waste management and conservation efforts were essential for safeguarding the future of coming generations.
