As Pakistan’s economic officials prepare to unveil Budget 2026-27, millions of Pakistanis wonder whether this budget will bring relief or tighten an already unbearable noose? The government’s challenge is immense. Under pressure to generate revenue, policymakers often find the easiest solution in burdening those already struggling to survive. The upcoming budget must mark a departure from business as usual. Before imposing new burdens on the masses, the ruling elite should embrace genuine austerity. Accountability should be strengthened, public resources protected and sacrifices shared fairly across society.
