Residents staged a protest outside the Sharifabad police station on Sunday. They surrounded the station and demanded action against a policeman whom they accused of harassment and intimidation.
The protesters also included women and children who chanted slogans against the alleged conduct of the policeman. The protesters claimed that a police constable identified as Hamza had been harassing and intimidating local residents at gunpoint. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, no effective action had been taken against the cop.
Demonstrators further accused the Sharifabad police of protecting their colleague and failing to address their grievances. They demanded that senior authorities take notice of the matter. During the protest, some agitated residents also entered the police station premises and continued chanting slogans against the police.
According to police sources, the dispute between the cop and local residents was of a personal nature and had reportedly been ongoing since before Eidul Azha. No official statement had been issued by police authorities on the matter at the time of filing of this report.
