A police constable was arrested after a murder case was registered against him in connection with a woman in Lyari being gunned down, police said on Tuesday.

The woman, Batool, 25, had been found dead from a gunshot wound at a house in Lyari’s Bakra Piri area within the limits of the Kalakot police. According to police, FIR No. 156/26 was registered under Section 302 against the woman’s neighbour, PC Asif, on the complaint of Batool’s father Hanif.

The complainant said his daughter had married Farhan, a resident of Hyderabad, on December 20, 2018, and the couple had a four-year-old son. He said that marital disputes had emerged around a year and a half ago, after which Batool left her husband’s home and moved to Karachi with her son to live with her sister in Lyari.

Hanif said that on Monday evening, due to the unavailability of gas at home, Batool had gone to her neighbour Asif’s house to make chips for her son, when Asif’s 12-year-old son came and informed the family that “his sister” had shot herself with a pistol.

When the family rushed to the house, they found Batool lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen. Police said the suspect was taken into custody immediately after the incident. The suspect’s wife reportedly told the police that the woman had committed suicide by shooting herself in the forehead.

However, Batool’s family claimed that she had been murdered by the PC. Following the registration of the case, police formally arrested Asif and launched further investigations to determine whether the incident was a suicide or a homicide.
