The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Monday issued a warning as regards expected heatwave conditions across the country during the upcoming Eidul Azha holidays.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a high-pressure system is likely to develop in the upper atmosphere and intensify from May 26 (today), resulting in moderate to severe heatwave conditions that may persist until May 31.
The PMD said temperatures in several districts of Sindh are expected to rise significantly above normal levels, with daytime temperatures likely to remain four to six degrees higher than average. In some districts, mercury levels may soar between 47 and 50 degrees, creating extremely harsh weather conditions.
The districts expected to experience the most intense heat include Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Larkano, Mohenjo Daro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Badin, Sujawal, Thatta, Hyderabad, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Umerkot, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro and Sanghar.
Karachi is also expected to experience very hot weather during the forecast period, with temperatures likely to range between 35 and 38 degrees. The PDMA urged residents, particularly women, children and the elderly, to remain extremely cautious during the intense heat.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 10am and 4pm, when temperatures are expected to peak. The PDMA also stressed the importance of staying hydrated and taking preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Farmers across Sindh are advised to plan agricultural activities according to weather conditions and ensure proper care for livestock during the extreme temperatures. The PDMA also warned that electricity demand may rise considerably due to increased use of cooling appliances, and urged the public to use water wisely.
All the relevant authorities have been told to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to avoid any untoward situation during the Eidul Azha holiday period amid the expected heatwave.
