Walk through any neighbourhood in Karachi the day after Qurbani and the picture is the same: offal piled on roadsides, drains blocked with blood and a smell that stays for days. This is not a new problem. It happens every single year and, every year, we move on without fixing it. The local authorities do make efforts. Waste collection vehicles are deployed and fines have been announced for improper disposal. However, effort, without a proper system, changes very little. There should be designated disposal points in every neighbourhood, clearly marked and reachable. That said, citizens cannot put all the blame on the authorities either. Disposal points only work if people actually use them. Eid teaches sacrifice and responsibility, and that responsibility should not stop at our own front door.
