Amid the ongoing wave of street crime in the city, robbers claimed the life of another citizen in the Shah Latif Town area of District Malir in Wednesday.
The incident took place in a street near Minhaj-ul-Quran Masjid in Sector 17 of Shah Latif Town, where robbers opened fire on a young man after he allegedly offered resistance before fleeing the scene.
The victim’s body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities, where he was identified as 35-year-old Shahzeb, originally a resident of Shaheed Benazirabad. The police said the deceased had previously worked as a pushcart vendor and had recently been unemployed.
CCTV footage of the incident showed two youths standing in the street beside a motorcycle while Shahzeb was sitting outside a house. Moments later, two armed robbers arrived on another motorcycle. One of the suspects was seen snatching a mobile phone from a young man present in the street. During the robbery, Shahzeb got up and approached the robbers, upon which one of the armed suspects directly opened fire at him. Shahzeb collapsed on the ground while the robbers escaped from the scene. Screams could also be heard after the shooting.
The police said officers reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and called the crime scene unit to collect evidence. One spent bullet casing was recovered from the scene. The place where Shahzeb was shot was not his residence, as he lived some distance away from the location.
The incident sparked anger among local residents, who strongly criticized the police, saying the fearless robbers neither fear the law nor any consequences. Residents lamented that innocent citizens were being shot and killed by armed criminals on a daily basis, leaving people feeling helpless and insecure.
