ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including K-Electric customers, are set to receive a potential relief of about Rs63.94 billion in three months as the power regulator reviews a quarterly adjustment request for the first quarter (Jan-March) of 2026.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Tuesday held a public hearing on the Discos adjustment petitions covering January to March, with early indications pointing to a reduction of Rs1.93 per unit in electricity prices. The final decision will be announced after completion of the hearing process.
According to data presented during the proceedings, Discos have requested adjustments reflecting major cost reductions across multiple heads.
Capacity charges fell by Rs36.83 billion during the quarter, while use of system charges (UoSC) and market operation fees (MoF) declined by Rs11.24 billion. An additional Rs23.51 billion reduction has been sought under incremental energy units.
Industry stakeholders attending the hearing welcomed the possible relief, calling it a positive development for consumers amid global energy price volatility. Several participants praised Nepra and the Power Division for maintaining stability in electricity tariffs despite external pressures.
“Given the global situation, electricity prices have risen in many countries, but local policy has helped avoid increases here,” one industrial consumer said during the session, adding that further reductions should continue to support economic activity.
Another industry representative, Tanveer Bari, said the expected Rs1.93 per unit cut was encouraging and urged continued reforms to pass efficiency gains on to consumers.
Participants also noted structural changes in the power sector, pointing out that several older power plants are being retired while new capacity is being added.
They highlighted that Pakistan currently has an installed generation capacity of about 45,000 megawatts, while actual production stands near 25,000 megawatts, raising questions about planning and demand growth. Nepra is expected to issue its final determination after completing stakeholder consultations and reviewing all submitted data.
