JAMRUD: The Fata Loya Jirga on Sunday demanded the restoration of the old administrative system in the tribal belt and urged the federal government to include the reversal of the merger in the proposed constitutional amendment.

Jirga leaders Fazal Karim, Bismillah Khan, Khan Marjan and Israrullah made the demand while addressing a press conference at the Jamrud Press Club.

The representatives of the jirga said that the government had merged Fata into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in haste without consulting the tribal people.

They said that lasting peace and security in the tribal districts could only be achieved if the government took local leaders into confidence, as decisions made without their consultation were ineffective.

Highlighting the lack of peace in the region, they said the situation was not improving because the government continued to make decisions without involving the tribal population.

The jirga expressed dissatisfaction with the current system in the tribal districts, stating that conditions had worsened and that tribal society had become more backward than before.

They accused the government of not fulfilling even a single promise made to the tribal people at the time of the merger.

The jirga leaders urged the government to take concrete steps to establish peace in the tribal areas, similar to other parts of the country.
