ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the bail granted to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry by the Lahore High Court (LHC) in the remaining two cases and disposed of the Punjab Prosecution’s appeals seeking cancellation of his bail, citing substantial progress in the trial.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and comprising Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the appeal of the Punjab government.
The Supreme Court dismissed the Punjab Prosecution’s appeals against the bail granted to the PTI leader in the May 9 cases and maintained the LHC’s bail orders in the two cases.
During the hearing, Punjab Prosecutor General Ahmad Raza Gilani appeared before the court and submitted that the Supreme Court had earlier directed that the May 9 cases be concluded within four months. He informed the court that decisions had already been announced in 8 out of the 10 cases against Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry.
He further informed the court that the accused remains in jail and that the trials are continuing.
Meanwhile, the same bench, while hearing another case regarding the killing of a girl in Rawalpindi following a jirga decision over a love marriage, issued notice to the accused involved in killing his sister.
The bench was hearing the Punjab government’s appeal seeking cancellation of bail granted to the accused.
During the hearing, the Punjab prosecutor general told the court that the girl was called back from Kashmir and killed following a jirga decision.
He further told the court that the girl was murdered and buried. The chief justice asked the prosecutor general whether notice should be issued in this case.
“Yes, certainly,” he replied, adding that mandatory notices should be issued on the appeals seeking cancellation of the accused’s bail.
Meanwhile, the court issued notice to the respondent accused and adjourned further hearing until the first week of June.
It is pertinent to mention here that the case was registered at the Fouji Colony Pirwadhai Police Station in Rawalpindi. The girl was allegedly killed in front of family members following a jirga decision over her love marriage.
After the murder, women washed the body before burial. The body was transported to the graveyard in a loader rickshaw and buried. The FIR was registered in July 2025.
The Punjab Prosecution had approached the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to accused Zafarullah and others.
