The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), under the leadership of Mayor Murtaza Wahab, has launched a major environmental initiative in collaboration with the Climate Action Centre aimed at improving public awareness regarding air pollution and environmental conditions in the city.

Officials said the Air Quality Index (AQI) will be displayed on streamers and SMDs installed across KMC’s jurisdiction.

Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the Air Quality Index (AQI) Display Project, which will provide real-time information about air quality to citizens across Karachi. The project has been initiated with the support of the Climate Action Centre and will see AQI displays installed at more than 100 prominent locations and major arteries of the city.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Wahab said that the city administration is actively working towards promoting green energy and investing in environmentally sustainable projects. He highlighted that the KMC has already initiated the conversion of several municipal facilities to solar energy, which has not only reduced operational costs but also significantly minimized carbon emissions.

“We are committed to transforming Karachi into an environmentally responsible and sustainable city. The future of Karachi is directly linked with environmental protection, and we will continue to take practical measures for a greener tomorrow,” the mayor said.

He further said that the KMC is also introducing a green fleet for municipal vigilance and operational staff as part of its broader environmental strategy. According to the mayor, these initiatives are part of the administration’s long-term vision to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and improve urban sustainability.

He announced that for the upcoming fiscal year, a dedicated Green Fund has been allocated to establish more green spaces and launch additional eco-friendly projects across Karachi.

Officials said more than 50 air quality monitoring devices have already been installed in different areas of the city, while air quality data will be displayed at over 100 public locations to ensure citizens remain informed about environmental conditions in their surroundings.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Head of the Climate Action Centre Yasir Hussain, Parliamentary Leader of PPP in KMC Karamullah Waqasi, senior municipal officials, and other dignitaries.
