ISLAMABAD: Former captain Babar Azam and fast bowler Khurram Shahzad are likely to return to Pakistan’s playing XI for the second Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet as the tourists seek to level the series.

Pakistan, trailing 0-1 after losing the opening Test in Dhaka, are expected to ring in significant changes following growing dissatisfaction within the team management over the performance and attitude of some senior players during the first Test.

Well-placed sources in Sylhet confirmed to The News that the coaching staff and captain were far from pleased with the way certain key players approached the series opener, prompting serious discussions over two to three changes in the lineup for the second Test starting Saturday.

Babar, who missed the Dhaka Test due to a knee issue, has reportedly recovered well and resumed intensive net sessions. The stylish right-hander is now strongly tipped to return to the side, with Saud Shakeel likely to make way for him.

The team management, however, appears unwilling to disturb the young brigade after debutants Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal showed promise in difficult conditions during the first Test. Their performances have earned appreciation within the camp, making it unlikely for either youngster to lose his place.

Pakistan’s combination for the second Test will largely depend on the nature of the Sylhet wicket. If the pitch retains the greenish tinge seen on Thursday, the visitors may once again opt for a three-pronged pace attack.

In that scenario, Khurram Shahzad is expected to come into contention, potentially replacing either Hasan Ali or spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi should the latter fail to attain full match fitness in time. Sources further revealed that head coach Sarfaraz Ahmad has demanded complete commitment from senior members of the squad and is prepared to make bold decisions if he senses a lack of intensity or purpose from any player. A reserve spinner has also reportedly been asked to remain ready in case the management decides to bolster the spin department depending on last-minute pitch assessments.

Yet, despite the likely changes, the biggest challenge for Pakistan may come from the weather rather than team selection. Heavy rain is forecast to disrupt the Sylhet Test on at least three days, significantly reducing the chances of a result and complicating Pakistan’s hopes of making a comeback in the series.

With Pakistan already struggling for consistency and confidence, the uncertain weather conditions are expected to further increase the pressure on the tourists in what has now become a must-win encounter.
