Over 21,000 Pakistanis in jails abroad, NA told

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly was informed on Monday that a total of 21,480 Pakistanis were currently imprisoned in various countries out of which 154 nationals were imprisoned due to their inability to pay fine.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar presented the details of Pakistanis imprisoned in various countries and those released in a written reply to a question asked by Ms Mahjabeen Khan Abbasi during the question hour.

According to details, a major chunk of imprisoned Pakistanis were in the Gulf States including 5,300 in Riyadh, 5,445 in Jeddah, and 5,297 Pakistanis in the UAE. In a written reply to another question of Mahjabeen Khan Abbasi with regard to the Pakistani prisoners released from various countries during the last one year, the foreign ministry told the National Assembly that 12,559 Pakistanis were released from various countries during the last one year. The House was informed that during the last one year, 4,863 Pakistanis were released from Baghdad, 1,899 from Dubai, 1,650 from Kuala Lumpur and 1,947 from Jeddah.
