ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) on Saturday said May 9, 2023 was one of the darkest days in Pakistan’s political history, when an attempt was made to change the political direction of the country through the force of lawlessness.
Explaining the opposition alliance’s position on the eventful day, TTAP spokesman Akhunzada Hussain charged that on that day, former prime minister Imran Khan, the head of the coalition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, was illegally arrested from the premises of the Islamabad High Court, after which the situation that arose was used as a basis to crush an entire political party, suppress political workers, and criminalize dissent. “The Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan believes that the events of May 9 were merely used as a justification for actions against political opponents, which severely damaged constitutional freedoms, basic human rights, and the political process,” he contended.
He pointed out that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman Imran Khan has also repeatedly called for an independent and transparent judicial inquiry into the events of May 9. “The opposition alliance fully supports this demand of the PTI leadership and reiterates that an independent, impartial and authoritative judicial inquiry should be conducted into all the events of May 9, 2023, so that the facts can be brought to the fore; those responsible can be identified and the Constitution and democracy can be protected from such crises in the future,” he stressed.
