In the present era, data is wealth. Personal information, location data, browsing history and financial transactions are being continuously collected by various companies and state institutions. In the context of South Asia, data privacy is still an evolving concept. Many countries either lack comprehensive data protection laws or have limited implementation of existing ones. Consequently, citizens’ personal information often remains at risk. Incidents such as database breaches, data leaks and unauthorized use of data on online platforms are frequently reported.

Many companies collect user data and use it for advertising or other commercial purposes. Although they obtain consent through terms and conditions, in reality, most users accept these without reading them. To ensure data privacy, governments must enact strong and modern data protection laws aligned with international standards. It is equally important to bring technology companies under transparency and accountability frameworks. Public awareness must also be increased so that individuals understand the value of their data and use digital platforms responsibly.
