Temperatures are spiking across the country and reports suggest that this year’s heat could be more intense than usual. However, preparedness at the district level remains weak and inconsistent. In many smaller cities and rural areas, people lack access to basic protection such as cooling spaces, clean drinking water and timely medical support. Immediate and practical steps are needed. Local administrations should establish temporary cooling centres in schools, mosques and community halls equipped with fans, water and basic medical aid. Authorities must also regulate working hours during peak heat, especially for outdoor labourers, to prevent heat-related illnesses. Public awareness campaigns in local languages can help people understand how to stay safe during extreme temperatures. Timely action at the grassroots level can save lives and reduce suffering.
