BANNU: Multiple casualties were feared following a fierce clash between local tribesmen and militants in the Darpakhel area of North Waziristan district, officials said.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Bannu Range, Sajjad Khan, said that a heavy contingent of police was dispatched to the scene.
He said that the police established checkpoints at key locations to prevent reinforcements from reaching the militants, while security forces were also present in the area.
Officials said police acted promptly to contain the situation and maintain law and order.
The injured were taken to the Civil Hospital Miranshah.
Sources said that five to six militants were killed and several others were injured in the exchange of fire.
On the other side, three people, including a tribal elder, Malik Saifullah, lost their lives, while eight others sustained injuries.
Authorities said the timely action by the police prevented further loss of life.
“Police are always prepared to protect the lives and property of citizens,” DIG Sajjad Khan said, adding that the swift response helped bring the situation under control and ensured immediate medical assistance to the injured.
He said that all available resources were being utilised to restore peace and stability in the area, adding that action against the miscreants would continue unabated.
