MANSEHRA: The district administration of Lower Kohistan has put all relevant departments on high alert ahead of the monsoon season to deal with flash floods and other emergencies effectively.
“In view of previous experience, people in the district had suffered heavily during the monsoon season due to continuous rains and flooding. All departments must remain vigilant and utilise their full resources to respond to any untoward situation,” Deputy Commissioner Tariq Mehmood told a meeting held at his office on Saturday.
The meeting, attended by the additional deputy commissioner, assistant commissioners, and heads of devolved departments, finalised a monsoon contingency plan and placed all departments on high alert.
Speaking on the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdul Wali Khan said that the management of the Dubair Khawar Hydropower Project should issue warnings before opening spillways in case of flooding.
“People living along stream banks in the Dubai Valley should remain cautious during monsoon rains to avoid any emergencies,” he added. The district has witnessed significant losses of life and property in recent years due to monsoon rains and flash floods.
Meanwhile, National Assembly’s Standing Committee chairman and MNA Malik Mohammad Idrees said that Wapda would honour all agreements signed with indigenous communities in the Dubair and Ranowali areas of Lower Kohistan. A meeting in this regard, attended by Deputy Commissioner Tariq Mehmood and committee members, reviewed the progress on carpeting the Dubai-Ranowali road.
