In a major step to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on key arteries of the city, the Karachi Traffic police on Thursday established a modern “Traffic Flow Unit (TFU).”
Additional IG Karachi Azad Khan was given a detailed briefing at the Karachi Police Office auditorium by DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah regarding the formation, objectives, and operational strategy of the new unit.
The Traffic Flow Unit would be deployed at 37 major congestion points across the city to ensure an immediate response to traffic jams caused by minor violations and illegal obstructions.
The unit comprises 32 trained and technology-equipped personnel who would conduct continuous patrolling, monitoring, and swift action within designated micro-zones to maintain smooth traffic flow.
The TFU would enforce a zero-tolerance policy against one-way and wrong-way driving, double parking, illegal encroachments, fancy number plates, tinted windows, and rooftop riding. The unit would function under the supervision of DSP TRACS and the overall command of the DIG Traffic Karachi.
Addressing the ceremony, the Additional IG Karachi said that traffic police serve as the “ambassadors” of the department, as public perception was directly shaped by the performance and conduct of officers on the ground. He added that the use of modern technology, effective monitoring, and ground-level feedback would further improve Karachi’s traffic management system and ensure safer, more organised travel for citizens.
