LAHORE: The Punjab government has reported progress on its prison reforms agenda, with an adult literacy programme launched in all jails across the province.
According to a handout issued by the Directorate General Public Relations Punjab, literacy centre classrooms for inmates were inaugurated at Lahore district Jail by Chairman of the Chief Minister’s Task Force on Prisons Rana Manan Khan and Secretary Home Dr Ahmad JavedQazi, who also met with inmate teachers and students.
Officials stated that 176 literacy centres have been established in 44 jails, where 17,600 prisoners are currently receiving education. Under jail rules, both inmate teachers and learners will receive remission in their sentences for teaching and studying.
Rana Manan Khan said efforts are being made to transform prisons into reformative institutions. Dr Ahmad JavedQazi added that an adult literacy programme would also be launched for 40,000 probationers in Punjab.
