LAHORE: Pakistan’s under-16 football team concluded their historic debut in the UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Azerbaijan at the BIIK Sports Complex in Kazakhstan.
Pakistan dominated possession and pressed aggressively for much of the match, creating several chances, particularly after the introduction of striker Danish Masih in the second half. However, their efforts were undone in the 77th minute when Azerbaijan’s Nazim Aliyev capitalized on a counterattack to score from close range.
The task became even harder when defender Hamza was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute. Reduced to ten men, Pakistan poured forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to break down Azerbaijan’s resilient defense.
Head coach Mohammad Essa praised his players despite the defeat, highlighting the positives of Pakistan’s first-ever participation in a UEFA competition. “We played really positive football today with good attacking and build-up play. This is a learning tournament for us, and I think the boys showed a lot of spirit and determination,” he said.
Essa expressed gratitude to PFF President Mohsen Gilani for arranging the opportunity, stressing that exposure to such tournaments will accelerate the development of Pakistan’s youth football. “With more exposure I have no doubt that we will learn more,” he added.
Pakistan’s campaign began with a 4-1 defeat to hosts Kazakhstan, followed by a 2-1 loss to Russia, before ending with the narrow setback against Azerbaijan. While results did not go their way, the team showed resilience, particularly in the second halves of matches, where they created chances and displayed tactical discipline.
For Pakistan, the tournament was less about results and more about exposure. Competing against European youth sides provided invaluable lessons in pace, tactical awareness, and game management. The players demonstrated that they could match their opponents in intensity and technical ability, even if lapses in concentration proved costly.
