Progress has been made on a proposal to increase Karachi’s water allocation from Hub Dam, following a formal request by Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, officials said on Monday.
According to a spokesperson for the utility, the Sindh local government secretary has forwarded a summary to the chief minister based on the request, marking a key step in advancing the proposal.
The KWSC chief had sought an increase in the city’s water quota in light of Karachi’s rapidly growing population and worsening water shortage. The proposal recommends raising the current allocation from 100 million gallons per day (MGD) to 200 MGD.
Officials noted that Karachi’s share from Hub Dam has remained unchanged at 100 MGD since 1981, despite a sharp rise in population and water demand over the decades, exacerbating the city’s chronic water crisis. They added that the necessary infrastructure to support the increased supply is already in place. With the completion of the New Hub Canal, Karachi now has the technical capacity to receive up to 200 MGD of water.
However, officials pointed out that while the increase has become an urgent necessity, the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government. They said the Sindh government’s move reflects ongoing efforts to address Karachi’s pressing civic challenges and improve access to essential services for residents.
