The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) filed a contempt of court application in the Sindh High Court against the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) over continued loadshedding and alleged non-compliance with Nepra’s regulations and court directives.
Filing a application before the SHC and later talking to journalists, JI Karachi emir Monem Zafar and other applicants said that the SHC had directed K-Electric to end loadshedding in accordance with Nepra rules; however, the situation in the city remained unchanged.
They submitted that the court had also instructed Nepra to submit a report within a month, but the regulator had neither filed the report nor implemented the orders even after six months. They said the alleged contemnor has willfully and deliberately disobeyed the lawful directions of the court contained in the order passed on the petition whereby the matter of loadshedding was directed to be decided by Nepra within a one month and a compliance report was to be submitted before MIT-II.
Despite the lapse of substantial time, no such decision or report has been furnished, constituting clear and blatant disobedience of the court’s order, they said and added that the conduct of the alleged contemnor amounts to obstruction in the administration of justice and tends to bring the authority of the court into disrepute, as the clear, unambiguous, and time-bound directions of this court have been ignored without any lawful justification, thereby undermining the sanctity and efficacy of judicial orders.
They further submitted that the continued non-compliance has resulted in grave prejudice to the public at large, particularly the residents of Karachi, who are suffering severe hardship due to persistent loadshedding amid rising temperatures, and such inaction on part of the alleged contemnor warrants immediate intervention by the court Court through initiation of contempt proceedings.
