LAHORE: Standing Committee on Labour & Human Resource took up a matter regarding deaths of factory workers caused by silicosis in a meeting here on Monday.

The meeting was chaired by MPA Amjad Ali Javed. Minister for Labour & Human Resource Mansha Ullah Butt attended the meeting. The department gave a briefing on silicosis-related deaths and presented an action plan to control silicosis hazards across Punjab.

Silicosis, a preventable but incurable occupational lung disease caused by prolonged exposure to silica dust, is severely affecting workers in the stone crushing, mining, construction, and brick kiln sectors. The disease leads to permanent lung damage, resulting in chronic respiratory problems and, in severe cases, premature death.

The committee urged the departments concerned to ensure strict implementation of occupational safety standards, provision of protective equipment, and regular medical screening of workers.

It also emphasised the need for awareness campaigns and improved healthcare support for affected individuals. The committee directed the departments concerned to assign dedicated staff for the monitoring of factories. It was stressed that factories failing to comply with safety standards must be sealed. The committee also unanimously passed the Provincial Employees’ Social Security (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
