CHITRAL: A vital bridge located in Mastuj over the Yarkhun River is once again under serious threat from river erosion, raising concerns about potential structural damage and disruption to traffic.

The bridge, situated in the central area of Mastuj, serves as the only land connection linking Laspur valley, Shandur Pass, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Yarkhun valley with Chitral. Its strategic and logistical importance makes the situation particularly alarming, as any disruption could isolate thousands of residents and significantly affect tourist movement in the region.

According to local sources, strong currents in the Yarkhun River had already weakened the protective embankments around the bridge last year. The situation is now deteriorating further, with increasing fears that the bridge could be washed away if immediate preventive measures are not taken. Such a situation could also endanger nearby settlements and properties.

A similar incident occurred last year when cracks appeared in the bridge due to river erosion, forcing authorities to suspend traffic temporarily. At the time, personnel from the Pakistan Army and Chitral Scouts intervened promptly to prevent further damage.

Experts warn that water levels in the Yarkhun River are expected to rise after May, which could worsen the situation and complicate protective efforts. Residents have urged relevant authorities to take immediate action, including reinforcing embankments, deploying machinery, and implementing emergency measures to safeguard infrastructure worth millions and ensure uninterrupted traffic flow.
