LAHORE: An awareness session on the Juvenile Justice System was held in Bhakkar under the auspices of the Juvenile Justice Advocacy Network Pakistan in collaboration with the National Press Club, Bhakkar.
The session took place at a local hotel and was attended by representatives from Punjab Police, Prison Police, and other relevant departments.
During the session, participants discussed key aspects of the Juvenile Justice System, including legal safeguards for children in conflict with the law, institutional responsibilities, and the need for coordinated implementation. The participants stressed that the system should be enforced across Pakistan in its true letter and spirit to ensure protection of juveniles’ rights and access to fair legal processes.
Officials present at the session highlighted the importance of capacity-building within law enforcement and prison authorities to effectively handle juvenile cases in accordance with the law. They also underscored the need for inter-departmental coordination to strengthen the functioning of the system.
Speaking to The News, Director Legal Awareness Watch Advocate Sarmad Ali, said that the rules of business under Section 24 have yet to be introduced, which is hindering full implementation. He pointed out that juvenile justice committees in Punjab have not been made functional, despite their significance in the framework.
