A tense atmosphere followed a frightening incident at a garments factory in New Karachi Industrial Area, where gunfire shattered the routine of a working evening and left workers shaken.
The owner of the factory registered an FIR of the incident at the New Karachi Industrial Area police station.
A few days earlier, a local businessman, who owns the factory, received a phone call that would change everything. On April 7, an alleged extortionist linked to the notorious Lyari gang network, identified as Samad Kathiawadi, contacted him with a demand pay Rs3 million or face severe consequences.
At first, the businessman hoped it was just another empty threat, something he could ignore. But the tone of the caller suggested otherwise. The warning was clear, direct, and deeply unsettling.
For the next two days, tension hung over the factory. Workers carried on with their duties, but whispers of fear spread quietly across the production floor. The businessman, caught between fear and defiance, chose not to give in to the demand.
On the evening of April 9, at around 8pm, the threat turned into reality. Two motorcycles approached the factory gates under the cover of darkness. Before anyone could react, armed men opened heavy fire on the building. The sound of gunshots echoed through the industrial area, sending workers scrambling for safety. Some hid behind machinery, others rushed to lock themselves inside rooms, while a few managed to flee the premises in panic.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the damage to the building and the psychological impact on those present were significant. Bullet marks scarred the factory walls, standing as a stark reminder of the risks businesses face in such situations.
Following the attack, the businessman approached the New Karachi Industrial Area Police and filed a complaint. Acting swiftly, the police registered a case that includes charges of extortion, issuing threats of serious harm, attempted murder, and violations under the Telegraph Act. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, authorities transferred the case to the Special Investigation Unit for a deeper probe. Further investigations are underway.
