ISLAMABAD: Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan (TTP) Friday said the Constitution Day of Pakistan is a day of renewal of the idea that the 1973 Constitution is not just a document but a charter for the survival of the Federation of Pakistan, guarantee of public rights and national unity that “our ancestors created with immense sacrifices and exemplary political vision”.

In a statement issued here, the opposition alliance spokesman Akhunzada Hussain said that this Constitution is a milestone of democratic spirit, federal balance and Islamic values, that gave the country a permanent and unified identity 25 years after the establishment of Pakistan.

“Historic steps like the 18th Constitutional Amendment further strengthened parliamentary supremacy, but today it is regrettable to say that this sanctity is being violated,” he stated.

He stressed that political repression against the opposition, serious violations of fundamental human rights in the country and compromise on the rule of law are contrary to the spirit of this great document. “We are going through a difficult time where attempts are being made to interpret the Constitution according to specific interests rather than the public interest,” he contended.

The TTAP spokesman believed that the only solution to the current crises is full implementation of the Constitution, which guarantees provincial harmony and social justice: The 1973 Constitution is a reflection of the aspirations of the people and should not be allowed to be sacrificed to the decisions made behind closed doors.

History is a witness that whenever political forces united in the national interest, the biggest crisis ended, he noted and said “today, again, there is a need for us to create unity in our ranks. Our struggle is not against any individual or party but for the supremacy of the Constitution”.

The TTAP reiterated that “we will continue our democratic struggle for the protection of fundamental rights and the building of a strong, inclusive and just Pakistan”.
