Islamabad:The federal government has approved an updated national curriculum framework aimed at reducing academic pressure on young learners while making education more relevant to their lives.

Officials said the proposal, endorsed by the technical committee, focused on students from nursery through grade II. They noted that early-grade students currently faced excessive academic demands, which could make their first school experiences unnecessarily challenging.

Education secretary Nadeem Mahbub said that the framework would undergo further consultations before implementation. He added that joint surveys by federal and provincial authorities showed that the existing curriculum placed undue stress on young learners, affecting their overall educational experience.

Officials said under the revised framework, civic education would return through a new social sciences subject, forming a core part of broader educational reforms. They said the curriculum would also introduce essential life skills, climate awareness and financial literacy, equipping students with practical tools to navigate real-world situations.

The officials said the Ministry of Education intended to roll out the new syllabus in the next academic year. They emphasised that there was agreement between federal and provincial governments on the overall direction of the proposed reforms.

The officials said the technical committee convened its third session to review the draft, with participation from representatives across Islamabad, all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir as well as Gilgit-Baltistan.
