ISLAMABAD: In what promises to be a landmark moment for Pakistan’s sporting landscape, the country is set to welcome one of tennis’s most iconic figures, Björn Borg, for a week-long visit in early May, a development being hailed as a historic breakthrough for the game.

The five-time Wimbledon champion and former World No. 1 will arrive from May 3 to 10, marking the first-ever visit by a player of Borg’s stature to Pakistan. His presence is expected to add unprecedented prestige to the upcoming international tennis events scheduled by the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF).

Confirming the development, PTF President Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi expressed immense pride and excitement while speaking to The News. “With immense pleasure, I share that Björn Borg, a legend who dominated world tennis in the late 1970s and early 1980s will be visiting Pakistan. This is a historic first for us. Borg is not just a champion; he is among those rare players who helped globalize and popularize tennis,” Aisam said.

Widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest icons, Borg’s glittering career includes six French Open titles and five Wimbledon crowns, achievements that placed him among the immortals of the game. His calm demeanor, unmatched baseline play, and dominance on both grass and clay courts made him a global phenomenon during his prime.

Aisam added that the visit fulfills a commitment made last year to bring world-class tennis figures to Pakistan. “We had promised to invite top names to inspire our players and uplift the game locally. Borg stands out even among legends,” he emphasized.

The visit coincides with a busy international calendar hosted by the PTF, including back-to-back ITF Futures events, along with ITF Junior tournaments (J-30 and J-60 categories). These competitions are expected to provide invaluable exposure to Pakistan’s emerging talent, allowing them to compete alongside seasoned international players.

“The idea is to create opportunities for both junior and senior players to test themselves in a competitive environment. Hosting such events, combined with visits from legends like Borg, will significantly boost the standard and visibility of tennis in Pakistan,” Aisam noted.

Interestingly, Borg’s connection with Pakistan has already seen a positive start. His son, who visited the country last year for an ATP Challenger event, was full of praise for Pakistan’s hospitality and organization, a factor that further encouraged this historic tour.

Meanwhile, recognizing the magnitude of Borg’s contribution to global tennis and the significance of his visit, the PTF has formally approached the government to confer a civil award upon the Swedish legend.

“Borg is an icon of the sport, and his visit is of great value to Pakistan tennis. We have requested the government to honour him with a civil award, a gesture he truly deserves,” Aisam concluded.

Borg’s upcoming visit is being seen not just as a ceremonial tour, but as a transformative opportunity, one that could inspire a new generation of Pakistani players and help place the country on the international tennis map.
