LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced a sharp restructuring of the national team’s coaching contingent ahead of the FIH Pro League, removing Olympian Shakeel Abbasi from the coaching panel and naming a much smaller support group led by Manzoor ul Hassan Senior, with Khawaja Junaid and goalkeeping coach Mazhar Abbas among the shortlisted staff.

The PHF leadership framed the change as a corrective step to eliminate past administrative excesses and to provide players with a focused, distraction free environment. Officials emphasised cost control, clearer lines of responsibility and faster decision making as the primary motives for trimming the travelling party and technical entourage. Supporters of the decision argue that a compact staff reduces overlap, improves communication and places technical work — not administrative presence — at the centre of tour preparations.

Voices inside the hockey community offered mixed reactions. Proponents welcomed the emphasis on professionalism and accountability, noting that long lists of officials and observers on previous tours had diluted technical focus and strained budgets. Critics, however, cautioned that abrupt removals of experienced figures like Shakeel Abbasi risk undermining morale and losing valuable coaching continuity. Several former players and coaches have urged the PHF to pair structural streamlining with clear performance criteria and transition plans so that institutional knowledge is retained rather than discarded.

Technically, the new configuration has potential advantages. A smaller core staff can deliver more consistent training messages, speed up tactical adjustments and make logistics simpler during a congested international calendar. Khawaja Junaid’s public remarks about avoiding past mistakes underline a commitment to discipline and operational clarity. If the trio of Manzoor ul Hassan Senior, Junaid and Mazhar Abbas can establish well defined roles and measurable objectives, the team could benefit from sharper coaching inputs and improved match day management.
