Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday said that development work worth a total of Rs68 billion is underway to improve the city’s infrastructure.
He noted that projects like Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan have already been completed, while work is ongoing on key arteries, including Sher Shah Suri Road. The mayor said that in the past, rainwater flowing from hilly areas used to affect Sakhi Hassan Graveyard and surrounding localities, causing severe difficulties for residents. This project is an important step toward resolving these longstanding issues.
He added that the chief minister of Sindh has recently visited various areas, including Shah Faisal Colony, Azeempura Flyover and the Shahrah-e-Bhutto project. Shahrah-e-Bhutto is being constructed from Qayyumabad to Kathore in Gadap Town and will play a significant role in improving the city’s traffic system.
He expressed these views on Tuesday while laying the foundation stone of a development project for the improvement and rehabilitation of Sakhi Hassan Road in North Nazimabad Town. On the occasion, Pakistan Peoples Party leader Masarrat Niazi, city council members, elected representatives, party office-bearers, and KMC officials were also present.
Wahab said this project is part of a program for the construction and rehabilitation of 26 roads, which will better connect internal streets with main arteries. This will not only improve traffic flow but also boost local business activities.
He further said that when he assumed office, the institution was facing severe challenges; however, despite various difficulties, development work is now progressing rapidly across the city. He said that under Package-08, the scope of development activities is being expanded, and this project will provide better travel facilities and an effective drainage system to citizens.
The mayor further said that the cost of the Sakhi Hassan Road improvement and rehabilitation project is approximately Rs140 million. The project includes road rehabilitation, upgradation of the drainage system, and other basic facilities.
Sakhi Hassan Street will be transformed into a modern dual carriageway with a length of approximately 0.883 kilometers (2,900 feet) and a width of 30 feet. The project also includes the repair of a drainage line of the same length to ensure proper rainwater disposal.
This initiative will significantly reduce the problems faced by residents of Shadman and surrounding areas. He said that certain elements engage in criticism for the sake of criticism, but his focus remains on the development of the city rather than politics.
