KHAR: The poppy crops cultivated on a large swath of areas were destroyed on the first day of anti-opium eradication campaign in Bajaur tribal district on Saturday.

The district police personnel along with the district administration initiated the destruction of poppy fields where a heavy police contingent carried out an operation in Khar Circle.

Earlier, successful negotiations were held with local residents that resulted in the voluntary destruction of poppy crops.

During the operation, large-scale cultivation of the prohibited crop was eradicated, preventing potential production of narcotics and marking an important step toward eliminating the menace of drugs in the area.

District Police Officer Muhammad Khalid said that a zero-tolerance policy was being strictly implemented against narcotics, and no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

He added that poppy cultivation was not only illegal but also contributed to the spread of drugs in society. The police and district administration will continue to take effective joint measures to curb this issue.
