LAHORE: In an inspiring reflection of courage, perseverance and institutional transformation, Syed Eral Hussain, a visually impaired probationary officer of the 54th Common Training Programme (CTP), has distinguished himself as a symbol of excellence at the Civil Services Academy (CSA).
Born in 1998 in Karachi, Mr Hussain has faced visual impairment since birth due to Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative eye condition that gradually limits vision. Hussain’s educational journey began at Ida Rieu Blind School Karachi in 2005, completed his matriculation in 2014, and graduated from St Patrick’s College in 2017. He earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from at the University of Karachi.
A pivotal influence in his career choice was Ms Saima Saleem, a visually impaired officer of the Foreign Service of Pakistan, who, after qualifying the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination, went on to represent Pakistan at the United Nations. After an initial attempt, Hussain regrouped, successfully qualified the CSS examination and earned allocation to the prestigious Foreign Service of Pakistan. He joined the 54th CTP.
In an exclusive conversation with The Jang, Mr Hussain reflected on his journey with remarkable clarity and optimism. “Disability is not a limitation; it is only a different way of experiencing the world,” he said, adding that consistent effort, patience and the right guidance were central to his success. “I firmly believe that even the most ambitious goals can be achieved through baby steps, provided one remains focused and does not lose hope.”
He further emphasised, “Avoid self-pity and trust the process.” He expressing his determination to represent Pakistan with dedication and integrity on international platforms.
Recognising the importance of a supportive social environment, the administration has also sensitised roommates and fellow officers, fostering a culture of empathy, cooperation and mutual respect. Classrooms, common areas and training facilities have been made accessible, ensuring that physical barriers do not impede academic or professional engagement.
Director General CSA Farhan Aziz Khwaja, commenting on the academy’s approach, said that officers like Mr Hussain are provided tailored support systems that allow them to focus on training, develop their capabilities and prepare for effective public service.
