Just four days before the commencement of annual matriculation examinations, Ahmed Khan Chutto, inspector of schools and colleges from the Larkana board, has been appointed as the controller of examinations at the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) raising serious administrative concerns.
Sources said Chutto had earlier been posted at the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi; however, he faced strong resistance from board employees, which hindered his joining and eventually led to his return.
The Karachi matric board is the largest educational board in Pakistan, with approximately 400,000 candidates appearing in annual examinations. Experts have termed the timing of this appointment unusual and potentially disruptive.
It is pertinent to note that rules and regulations governing appointments of controllers, secretaries and audit officers across Sindh’s educational boards have already been formulated and forwarded to the provincial cabinet for approval.
Despite this, the decision to appoint an officer lacking examination management experience has raised eyebrows. The development also comes at a critical juncture when matric examinations are scheduled to begin on April 7, a new grading system has been introduced, and admit cards have yet to be issued.
