The ruling elite of Pakistan needs to adopt austerity measures instead of trying to emulate the decadent style of the British Raj’s colonial rule. Quaid-e-Azam and Fatima Jinnah set standards of austerity which our constitutional office holders must adopt. The British Raj trained civil and uniformed officers as representatives of an occupational force. This mindset needs to be shed immediately. Why should our office holders not travel in Pakistan assembled cars? It is time for the elite to ‘walk the talk’ instead of just asking the poor and middle classes to bear the burden of every crisis.
