The Karachi commissioner has officially fixed the maximum retail price of fresh milk at Rs240 per litre across Karachi Division with immediate effect, according to a notification issued on Tuesday.
The notification, issued by the commissioner of Karachi Division/controller general of prices and supplies Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, states that the new milk prices have been notified under Section 7 of the Sindh Essential Commodities Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act, 2005, as amended in 2008 and 2023.
Under the new official price structure, the dairy farmer rate has been fixed at Rs215 per litre, the wholesale rate at Rs225 per litre, and the retail price at Rs240 per litre. The order will apply within the local limits of Karachi Division and will remain effective immediately till further orders.
According to the notification, no individual or association will be allowed to announce or issue any price list different from the officially notified rates. The authorities have directed that the notification must be displayed at a conspicuous place for public information and compliance.
The Commissioner’s Office has also imposed a strict condition that no wholesaler, retailer or farmer shall sell milk in seer, effectively reinforcing the use of the litre as the standard unit of sale.
The notification further states that the quality and hygiene of milk must be ensured in accordance with the standard operating procedures. The official order has been circulated to top provincial authorities, including the Sindh chief secretary, principal secretary to the chief minister, secretary food, secretary livestock and fisheries, secretary agriculture, and all relevant deputy commissioners and stakeholders for implementation. The move comes as part of the Karachi administration’s efforts to regulate essential commodity prices and curb profiteering in the city’s milk supply chain.
