As part of celebration of 100 years of Sogetsu School of Ikebana, the Karachi Sogetsu Study Group on Tuesday organised a floral art demonstration by internationally acclaimed Ikebana master Sensei Christopher Lim from Singapore at a local hotel.

The event, organised by the director and board members of the Karachi Sogetsu Study Group, was attended by art enthusiasts, teachers, students, and members of the Sogetsu Study Group, who gathered to witness the intricate and expressive Japanese art of flower arrangement. Japanese Consul General in Karachi Hattori Masaru attended the event as chief guest.

Master Christopher Lim created nine different floral arrangements, ranging from small to large. For the finale, he crafted a striking installation using 100 wooden poles with 100 flowers. He showcased various Ikebana techniques, highlighting the Sogetsu school’s modern and creative approach.

Tarannum Lakda, director of the Sogetsu Study Group, said Sogetsu believed in modern art. She said the event was part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Sogetsu School of Ikebana being marked in Japan and around the world. She added that Christopher Lim was invited to Karachi to perform his demonstration so we can celebrate the 100 anniversary with him.

The speakers said that such demonstrations aimed to promote cultural exchange and artistic learning, while providing a platform for local artists and students to engage with internationally recognised masters.

Participants appreciated the live demonstration, noting that it offered valuable insight into Ikebana practices and inspired a deeper understanding of the balance between nature and artistic design.
