The Soyem, Quran Khawani and prayers for the late Marvi Khorshed Malik, daughter of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians Vice-President Senator Sherry Rehman, were held in a deeply moving atmosphere at the family’s residence in Old Clifton on Tuesday, where a large number of prominent political, social, business and academic figures gathered to offer condolences and pray for the departed soul.
The solemn ceremony drew an attendance from across Pakistan’s political and public life, reflecting the depth of grief felt over the passing of Marvi Khorshed Malik. Special prayers were offered for her forgiveness, eternal peace and elevation in rank.
Marvi Khorshed Malik had been suffering from a prolonged illness and passed away after undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karachi. Following the funeral prayers, she was laid to rest at a graveyard in Defence Phase VIII in the presence of family members, relatives and close friends on Monday.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and First Lady Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari visited Senator Sherry Rehman’s residence to offer condolences on the death of her daughter. They also expressed sympathy to Syed Nadeem Hussain on the loss of his daughter.
They were accompanied by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Saeed Ghani and Jameel Soomro, who also conveyed their sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved family. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari and others offered Fateha for the deceased and prayed for the elevation of her rank and for the family to be granted sabr-e-jameel.
Among those who attended the Soyem were senior PPP leaders Senator Raza Rabbani, Senator Waqar Mehdi, Senator Masroor Ahsan, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Senator Quratulain Marri, Senator Sarmad Ali, ND Khan, Farooq H Naek, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Nabeel Gabol, Nadeem Afzal Chan, Anwar Alam and Nayyar Bukhari. They offered Fateha for the deceased and conveyed their heartfelt condolences to Senator Sherry Rehman.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad were also present and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family, describing the death as a profound tragedy. Representatives of other political parties also attended the Soyem, including Awami National Party leader Shahi Syed and MQM-Pakistan leaders Kishwar Zehra and Nasreen Jalil.
Several prominent business and social personalities were also present, including Hameed Haroon, Wamiq Zuberi, Qazi Asad Abid, former finance minister Asad Umar, Miftah Ismail, former State Bank governor Saleem Raza, National Bank President Rehmat Ali Hasnie and Atlas Motor’s Saquib Shirazi. They joined the Holy Quran recitation and offered special prayers for the deceased.
Among the women leaders attending the gathering were PPP’s Sharmila Faruqui, Sumeta Afzal Syed, Saadia Javed, Begum Rahat Javed and Mehtab Rashdi. They consoled Senator Sherry Rehman and said the entire nation stood beside her in this painful hour.
Special arrangements had been made for Quran recitation, remembrance and collective supplication. Religious scholars prayed for the forgiveness of Marvi Khorshed Malik, for her to be granted the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous, and for patience and strength for her family.
Participants also met Senator Sherry Rehman, her husband Syed Nadeem Hussain, and Ehsan Malik to express their profound sorrow over the loss. The gathering remained enveloped in grief, with many mourners visibly emotional.
The ceremony concluded with collective prayers for forgiveness for Marvi Khorshed Malik, for the elevation of her status in the hereafter, and for fortitude for her loved ones. Mourners paid tribute to her memory and described her death as an irreparable loss not only for her family but also for all those who knew her.
