LAHORE: Newly appointed Chinese Consul General in Lahore Sun Yan said human capital equipped with Chinese language skills will be essential to unlocking the full potential of bilateral trade and investment between Pakistan and China.
Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) at the concluding ceremony of a three-month Chinese language course, he shared that Pakistan and China are moving towards an upgraded phase of cooperation under CPEC 2.0, with a focus on key sectors including industry, agriculture and mining.
He said that as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor deepens, professionals with an understanding of Chinese language and culture will be in high demand. Language, he added, serves as a bridge for communication and a tool to enhance mutual understanding and business collaboration between the two countries.
The consul general noted that China remains Pakistan’s largest trading partner, reflecting the depth of economic ties. However, he highlighted a significant imbalance in bilateral trade, with Pakistan’s exports to China at around $2.5 billion compared with imports of approximately $16.3 billion.
He also pointed to major infrastructure projects, including Gwadar Port, Karakoram Highway and the year-round opening of Khunjerab Pass, as key to improving connectivity and facilitating trade. These developments, he said, are laying the groundwork for deeper economic integration and regional cooperation.
LCCI President Faheemur Rehman Saigol said Pakistan has strong export potential in sectors such as agriculture, food processing, minerals, seafood, surgical instruments, sports goods, textiles, leather products and IT services. With improved market access, better certification mechanisms and enhanced business-to-business cooperation, he said, these sectors could significantly expand their footprint in China.
