Ahead of Eidul Fitr, the Karachi administration has decided to take measures to manage expected crowds, improve traffic flow, address parking issues, and curb professional beggars.
Officials said on Monday that a meeting chaired by Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi reviewed arrangements for Eidul Fitr, deciding to form teams with traffic police and local police to maintain order in markets and shopping malls.
Assistant commissioners will oversee these teams, and support camps will be set up with police help to guide shoppers and address complaints. It was also decided to take steps to ensure professional beggars are not visible around markets and shopping malls that cause people disturbed and harassed. The meeting decided to seek support from the welfare organisations like Saylani and JDC.
It was decided that assistant commissioners will hand over beggars to them and deputy commissioners would report to the commissioner daily about the beggars handed over to the welfare organisations.
The commissioner directed deputy commissioners to ensure that beggars handed over to welfare organisations are provided all basic needs and facilities. In this regard, the commissioner emphasized focusing on East, South, and Central districts.
Meanwhile, a meeting reviewed the progress of a campaign continuing against profiteers. Assistant Commissioner HQs Rabia Syed put up the report showing the data for the last three weeks from February 19 to March 15. The meeting was informed that 4,849 profiteers were fined Rs38.3 million during the three weeks period, while 97 shops were sealed and 91 profiteers were arrested.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of action taken against milk sellers who were found selling adulterated milk. Forty-three samples were checked, with 17 found adulterated in the past two days, resulting in fines of Rs159,000. The commissioner directed deputy commissioners to continue this campaign and take strict action against those selling adulterated milk.
